Illusion Illustration

This is a stereo sound file
Listen using external speakers

To experience the Glissando Illusion, it is best to be seated in front of two stereophonically separated loudspeakers, with one to your left and the other to your right, as in the diagram. (Avoid using headphones.) Set the sound level so that it is on the soft side, and make sure that the channels are in balance.

Finally, here is Deutsch's Glissando_Illusion, presented first with the two channels together, then with each channel separately, and then with the two channels together again. Notice that when the two channels are presented together, the melodies reorganize themselves perceptually.
